Several hours had passed, and the repairs to the defensive energy barrier were almost completed when the gravity alarm sounded.

“Massive vessel or a group of smaller ones flying in close formation, Master,” Poke called out to Myka. “If it is from a group of Groodfun-class ships, they could be moments away, if they were heading directly towards us.”

“Support. Status of tachyon capture?”

The male looked at his display then turned to face his commander. “We are only up to eight percent. Second Engine does not know why the capture is taking so long.”

“Weapons?”

“Insufficient, Commander. Main guns are unavailable. We have four sub-light torpedoes available. Fusion devices as warheads.” She turned to face Myka. “Incapable of causing damage through a Falusian barrier. I am sorry, Commander.”

“Screens, Technical?”

“Seventy percent or better, Commander. But they would run out of power in less than five one-hundredths against plasma weapons.” Six minutes.

“Do we have enough energy to generate ions at least? For the thrusters?”

Second Pilot responded, “In five one-thousandths, Commander. Enough to push us back into the atmosphere. Perhaps to traverse the outer fringe for a short distance.”

I am sorry, Beloved, Myka thought to himself. I have failed you. I have failed to come back to you. “As soon as we have the ions, Pilot, back into the planet's atmosphere.”

The alarm of the gravity detector sounded again, sooner than they had expected. Poke gasped. “It is huge, Commander. And it is stopping directly in front of us!”

“Weapons! Launch torpedoes!”
